Vocational education also called Career and Technical Education (CTE), prepares learners for jobs that are based in manual or practical activities, traditionally non-academic and totally related to a specific trade, occupation or vocation, hence the term, in which the learner participates. It is sometimes referred to as technical education, as the learner directly develops expertise in a particular group of techniques or technology.

Generally, vocation and career are used interchangeably. Vocational education might be classified as teaching procedural knowledge. This may be contrasted with declarative knowledge, as used in education in a usually broader scientific field, which might concentrate on theory and abstract conceptual knowledge, characteristic of tertiary education. Vocational education can be at the secondary or post-secondary level and can interact with the apprenticeship system. Increasingly, vocational education can be recognized in terms of recognition of prior learning and partial academic credit towards tertiary education as credit; however, it is rarely considered in its own form to fall under the traditional definition of a higher education.

Up until the end of the twentieth century, vocational education focused on specific trades such as for example, an automobile mechanic or welder, and was therefore associated with the activities of lower social classes. As a consequence, it attracted a level of stigma. Vocational education is related to the age-old apprenticeship system of learning.

In India vocational educational aims to develop skilled manpower through diversified courses to meet the requirements of mainly the unorganized sector and to instill self-employment skills in people through a large number of self-employments oriented courses. Vocational education is imparted through Industrial Training Institutes and polytechnics are the best examples. One of the weaknesses of Indian education system is that it does not gives due importance to vocational education. As a result there is a mismatch between the skilled manpower required and skilled manpower available.

Every year we churn out millions of graduates who do not have the specific skill sets required by the market. If this trend continues it would hurt our economic growth in the long run. To change this situation first we need to change our mindset. In India, people are obsessed with attaining a graduation degree and generally look down upon vocational education. This has resulted in a situation where on the one hand there are scores of unemployed graduates and on the other hand there is a huge shortage of skilled workers such as plumbers, electricians etc.

To rectify this situation vocational training programs in India need to be promoted in a big way. Vocational training courses include: typewriting, stenography, Secretarial Practices, Computer Operator & Programme Assistant, Architectural Draughtsman ship, Desk Top Publishing, Electrical Technician Electronics (Radio/TV/Tape Recorder Mechanic), Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Plumbing, Library Assistant, Cutting/Tailoring & Dress Making, Hair & Skin Care Fruit & Vegetable Preservation Programs.

On vocation training our work related to develop of the mechanism factor. Because a person can earn for his family by doing some work daily. So Navjivan Foundation have arrange training center and trained on the repairing of electronic machinery like as video, TV and radio etc. The organization has given equal rights for vocational guidance to the ladies and gents both and by arranging special camps given tanning to the people. Specially in India most of the ladies are house wife and if we insist them for the knowledge of some vocational course, so they will earn something for their and for their family and organization think it’s a great support for the develop of Indian economy.
