Leprosy Eradication

education

Leprosy meaning scales on a fish, or Hansen's disease (HD), is a chronic disease caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Leprosy is primarily a glaucomatous disease of the peripheral nerves and mucosa of the upper respiratory tract; skin lesions are the primary external sign. Left untreated, leprosy can be progressive, causing permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes. Leprosy does not directly cause body parts to fall off on their own accord; instead they become disfigured or auto amputated as a result of disease symptoms.

Historically, leprosy has affected mankind for at least 4,000 years, and was well recognized in the civilizations of ancient China, Egypt, and India. In 1995, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that between 2 and 3 million people were permanently disabled because of leprosy. In the past 20 years, 15 million people worldwide have been cured of leprosy. Although the forced quarantine or segregation of patients is unnecessary in places where adequate treatments are available, many leper colonies still remain around the world in countries such as India .MDT for multibacillary leprosy consists of rifampicin, dapsone, and clofazimine taken over 12 months. Dosages adjusted appropriately for children and adults are available in all Primary Health Centres in the form of blister packages. Single dose MDT for single lesion leprosy consists of rifampicin, ofloxacin, and minocycline. The move towards single dose treatment strategies has reduced the prevalence of disease in some regions since prevalence is dependent on duration of treatment. International Leprosy Day was created to draw awareness to leprosy and its sufferers.

Most previously highly endemic countries have now reached elimination. Information campaigns about leprosy in high-risk areas are crucial so that patients and their families, who were historically ostracized from their communities, are encouraged to come forward and receive treatment. The most effective way of preventing disabilities in leprosy, as well as preventing further transmission of the disease, lies in early diagnosis and treatment with MDT.

In India the people vice disease call it and it is from the past life. So the elders vice to the present people and for that it is on the result of present days. We have request to the Govt. hospital for the proper treatment of these types of people and our volunteers provide service to them. This time these types of people by neglect their family taking shelter in the surrounding of temple. We are on this service since 2006 and our awareness to people that this is a type of disease so its treatment can cure this. So as a human being we should not neglect to the effected people. The Government of India has initiated procedures for modifying the MDT management based on requisition as per the number of patients detected in each PHC. This had been suggested by WHO. The new MDT management plan had been started experimentally in Orissa and Kerala. Soon it is to be started in Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The Central Leprosy Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recently launched a Deformity Management and Medical Rehabilitation Program (DPMR) within the National Leprosy Eradication Program (NLEP). This is meant to prevent, reverse or manage the deformities caused by leprosy as this is the public face of the disease and the root of social stigma. This program aims to initiate and provide deformity management services in every part of the country. It would include Prednisolone therapy for lepra reactions; self care training, rehab aids, assisted care and physiotherapy and Reconstructive surgery. Health Units both in the Government and NGO sector are expected to work together in this. Depending on the need, services would be available in primary secondary and tertiary levels of health country throughout the country.
